Electronic Fingerprint Scans Unmask True Identities Within Minutes
PLANO, Texas — Two North Texas police departments that utilize Plano-based Mentalix, Inc.’s (www.mentalix.com) live scan systems captured a murder suspect by checking his identity with the Mentalix Fed Submit live scan system. In March, Lewisville police officers stopped the suspect, Danny Elenilson Osorio, for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, and he gave a false name and birth date. Osorio was arrested and booked at the Lewisville jail, where he was fingerprinted on the Mentalix Fed Submit live scan system. Within seconds, the live scan system matched his fingerprints to his true identity – as well as a 15-year-old warrant for a murder offense in Carrollton. Osorio is the last of four suspects to be charged in the 1997 murder of Scott Beitinger. The three other persons involved in the murder had previously been arrested and convicted. Osorio is believed to have fled to Mexico following the murder and was unable to be found. At some point, Osorio returned to Texas and has been working at a ranch near Lancaster.
Both the Carrollton and Lewisville police departments use the Mentalix Fed Submit live scan systems in their jails. According to Jon Stovall, information management officer at Carrollton Police Department: “Arrestees give fictitious names to us all the time – especially people with outstanding warrants. We’ve found their real identities using the live scanner perhaps hundreds of times.”
Lieutenant Dan Rochelle of the Lewisville Police Department relates a similar experience. “It happens all the time,” Rochelle says. “We arrest someone, and when we fingerprint them on the live scanner, we find out they’ve lied about who they are — usually when they have warrants. We’ve come a long way from the days of ink and cards, when it might take up to a month to have the identity confirmed through the mail.”
Mentalix live scan systems are used throughout Texas, with a high concentration of customers in the North Texas region, where the company is also headquartered.
